Outreach to our local schools has begun! Lead artist Allison Leigh Smith is visiting Deb Jackson’s 5th grade classes to discuss the importance of public art, this project specifically, and how they can contribute with their own artistic symbol of what Durango means to them. They’ll discuss symbolism, positive and negative shapes, and silhouettes. They will also talk about creating a personal emblem for their community. Ms. Jackson is having her students cut their symbols out of black paper and hold them up to the window so they can see how their chosen graphic will look if it is cut from metal screens, just like Common Threads.
